Sen. Moore Submits Testimony in Support of GMO Labeling

BOSTON – Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) submitted written testimony to the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture in support of legislation that would require labeling of food with Genetically Modified Organisms or “GMOs.”

The bill requires manufacturers to disclose the presence of GMOs within food products.  Maine, Vermont, Connecticut and more than 60 other countries, including the entire European Union, have already enacted laws requiring GMO labeling.

“This bill is about consumer choice,” said Sen. Moore. “The Commonwealth’s residents have become more conscious of their food choices and GMO labeling will give consumers the most accurate information available when making decisions about the foods they purchase for themselves and their families.”

The legislation, which is co-sponsored by three quarters of the Legislature’s 200 members, received a public hearing on Tuesday by the Joint Committee.  To access a copy of the bill text, please visit the Legislature’s website by clicking here.
