BOSTON – Paying for a college education can be both expensive and confusing when you have to factor in the tuition, fees, housing costs and food. But the state Senate wants to make it easier for prospective college students to know exactly how much they would pay before they commit to a school.
On Thursday, the Senate passed a bill requiring all Massachusetts colleges to provide accepted students with a Financial Aid Shopping Sheet. It would include details of the estimated cost of attending that particular college, and lay out all of the grant and scholarship opportunities that are available to students.
State Senator Michael Moore told 22 News that the state is dedicating more money toward higher education than in years past. “Up until about two years ago, we were 47th in the country for state appropriation. We’re now down to like the mid-twenties, 24th or 25th in the country, so we’ve come a long way.”
The goal is to prevent people from taking on unaffordable college debt.
