CLS is a citizen seminar that aims to better educate the public on the Commonwealth’s legislative process. Established in 1976 through a collaborative effort of the Massachusetts Senate and the University of Massachusetts, the two-day seminar features presentations by Senators and staff on aspects of the day-to-day experience of legislators in the Commonwealth.

"It was a great opportunity to experience the legislative process firsthand," said Andrew.  "I got to learn more about what our Senators do and was able to partake in the process of how a bill is passed; from its sponsorship by a legislator, to the bill becoming law."

“I commend Andrew for taking time during his spring break to pursue learning about the legislative process,” said Sen. Moore.  “It’s always great to see local residents civically engaged— especially the millennial generation.  I’m sure Andrew found his experience to be both rewarding and informative.”

The CLS culminates in a simulated legislative hearing and Senate session where participants are invited to use what they have learned and participate as “Senators” in a live debate in the Senate Chamber.  During the 76th CLS, Andrew directly participated in a debate regarding legislation that would promote the use of body-worn cameras by law enforcement.

Andrew is currently in his junior year at Saint Michael’s College located in Colchester, Vermont.  He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in mathematics.
