WORCESTER, MA – Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) engaged in an open discussion with Advanced Placement (AP) Government and Politics students from North High School in Worcester about the importance of public policy and its impact at the local, state and at federal levels.
Sen. Moore also had the opportunity to share his thoughts and insights about serving as an elected official in the State Senate. The AP Government and Politics course curriculum analyzes political structures and policies of various Nations, as well as the political, economic, and social challenges each country faces and how they are dealt with on a global scale. Sen. Moore was invited to speak as part of an ongoing effort to introduce the AP students to area legislators and public officials who serve in government.
“I thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the future leaders of our Commonwealth,” said Sen. Moore. “The students had many great questions about the implications of statewide policies on the City of Worcester and beyond. I thank the students for the insightful dialogue, and appreciate the faculty at North High School for inviting me. It is important to have these discussions with youth about how public policy is developed and implemented.”
Sen. Moore has long supported the expansion of youth civic education and engagement. Currently, Sen. Moore is a co-sponsor of legislation entitled An Act to involve youth in civic engagement. The bill would develop a Governor’s Youth Council to work with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to establish model curriculum units to add civics to the history and social science curriculum framework. The bill was reported favorably the by Joint Committee on Education and is currently under review by the Senate Committee on Ways and Means.
