BOSTON – Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) and Representative David K. Muradian, Jr. (R-Grafton) recently announced that House Bill 3726, An Act relative to the employment contract for the Director of Public Works in the Town of Upton, was signed into law by the Governor.
After receiving unanimous approval by the Legislature, House Bill 3726 was signed into law by Governor Charlie Baker on Friday, September 1, 2017. This new law allows the Town of Upton to negotiate an employment contract for the position of Director of Public Works for a period up to three years. Under previous law, the Town was restricted from entering into a contract beyond one year. The Department of Public Works possesses the second largest budget in the community, only second to the School Department. The Town sought this legislative change to help attract and retain highly talented individuals for the position.
“The maintenance of local infrastructure is an important responsibility that impacts the entire community,” said Senator Moore. “I am pleased to have worked with Representative Muradian to move this bill over the goal line. The Town has expressed an interest in extending the contract period for the position and I am proud to have delivered a legislative response.”
“The passing of this legislation is exciting for both the Town of Upton and all residents within the Commonwealth,” said Representative Muradian. “I am confident that the Department of Public Works will continue to hire talented individuals that strive to enhance the quality of life for all residents of Upton.
This legislation was filed pursuant to an official request from the Town of Upton during a Town Meeting vote on Article 4 taken November 15, 2016. The bill was signed into law by the Governor as Chapter 77 of the Acts of 2017.
